Invited / unsettled
Saudi Arabia
Invited in 2023. Presidency lists sometimes include the Kingdom; Saudi officials have also described membership as not yet finalized.
| Official name | Kingdom of Saudi Arabia |
|---|---|
| Capital | Riyadh |
| UN membership | 1945 (founding UN member) |
| Languages | Arabic |
| BRICS cohort | Invited / unsettled |
| Accession note | Invited at the Johannesburg summit, August 2023, for accession from 1 January 2024; formal completion remains publicly unsettled |
| Region | West Asia / Gulf |
Saudi Arabia received a Johannesburg invitation alongside Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Argentina. Argentina later declined. The Kingdom’s formal accession has not been announced in the same unambiguous way as the 1 January 2024 four.
This site therefore files Saudi Arabia as invited / unsettled, not as a confirmed full member. That is a status call about public evidence, not a judgment of the Kingdom’s foreign policy.
Situation note
Gulf oil export lanes and Hormuz exposure are OilRoutes and Armed Conflicts citations. Do not treat an invited-state page as proof of full membership.
